A Meltwater story from Japan

"I worked at Meltwater in [an office in Japan] from Jan. to just a few days ago; I was fired because during the six months, I couldn't reach my target and they think I don't have potential to become a manager.
Since I like the members of Tokyo office, I didn't much care about cultic MW culture etc.; however, I really didn't like that I was doing pushy cold calling. I think what they do in terms of overall business structure is just fine but I just don't think how they organize is the right way.
The first 4 months, I worked extremely hard like a horse, didn't have my private life but that was okay because I really want to focus on my quota. The first of last month, I just burned out and started to get deeply depressed.
I was a fresh college graduate when I started working MW; and now I'm @job hunting again.
Because of this recession, it'll be hard to get a new job and I didn't want to quit and tried to make much effort to stay there as possible. I got 2 deals in my last month and I sold the most in my team. I even beat my manager in terms of numbers of quota for last 3 months in a row; it doesn't make sense that they just laid me off!

I want to warn Tokyo and Osaka candidates loudly but since Japanese branch is just set up and really tough to speak loud in my language (Japanese). I bet for some of them MW is just perfect place to work, but unfortunately, not for most of others."

- Great work - so you posted the comment here. "Art pause." Well, the ranks of Google got even worse. Thanks, mam, and good job. High five!

I would recommend that Nicole takes a hard look at the Meltwater company, and suggest to Jørn that improving the telemarketing part of the firm and change the name of the trainee to "telephone sales position" would be more effective. Maybe advertising for an international mangement position was a good idea for hiring in short term, but it sure as hell pissed people off in the long term.

Because: If Meltwater had such a great trainee, like the ones you know from Google, Telenor etc, this blog would NEVER EXSIST. NEVER EVER.

Think about it.

I just checked the Statistics Norway (Statistisk Sentralbyrå).

In this ultra tiny country (Norway) we have over 300 000 registered companies. Thousand of which have more than 50 employees.

And in the US, well go figure. We're talking about millions.

Why, I dare ask, don't these companies receive critisicm online? I haver never seen something like this before.

Admit it Jørn Lyseggen, and Meltwater you fucked up big time with this blog, and you deserved it.

Anonymous said...

these companies DO receive criticism online you fool!
they just spend hundreds of thousands of dollars burying it!

Anonymous said...

You might be right.

However, for a norwegian company, this is pretty damn rare.

Anonymous said...

I would like to ad: Meltwaters competitors, like Cizion (http://no.cision.com/no/) don't have a blog like this.

I would expect if their sales positions were just as deceiving and miserable they would have a anti-cizion-blog too, yet they do not.

Anonymous said...

Speaking of "deceiving and miserable",
have you seen the nasty tweets that your antimeltwater friends have been posting about innocent individuals in the company "boning their way to the top"?

We are talking about someone who happens to have a boyfriend who works for the company's tech department!

It is disgusting how your team has made it their personal goal to tarnish good people's reputations when they did nothing to you!
You don't even know this individual, or how good she is at her job! Or how good of a person she is!

I think we can all agree that you guys have reached a new low. I hope you feel really good about yourself knowing that.

Anonymous said...

pardon me, but didn't that tweet appear on twitter and not here? why don't you respond to that person on twitter?

i don't know if it is true or not. who the hell knows?

and we are not a "team" by any stretch of the word. the comments on this blog come from a GLOBAL network of anonymous individuals who do not know each other.

i will be more than surprised if the meltwater flag is still flying in a year.

Anonymous said...

still.
it is disgusting the way you all operate.

taking advantage of individuals by calling them out by name in public media forums!

how dare you!

you should be embarrassed to even be affiliated with such people.

(and yes, you all operate under the same name... you might as well be a team)

Anonymous said...

(and yes, you all operate under the same name... you might as well be a team)

This is a bit easy and you know it.

Before I begin: Thanks to you for replying to the posts; you play an important role in pushing this site high up in the Google search engine, so that potential clients and employees get a more nuanced picture of what's really going on in the Meltwater organizatian as compared to the highly biased commercial named www.meltwater.com

Tweet? What fucking tweet? I have never seen it, and frankly I don't care, because yes, Meltwater is an orgy of butt licking and boning to the top.

Beeing an open forum is what it is, but at least all opinions come out, positive or negative.

Go whine somewhere else. Shouldn't you be phoning and prospecting by the way? You will get dragged into a meeting room and bitch slapped if a SM find you lurking around in the Internet, not prospecting.

High five!

Anonymous said...

you have to remember these Meltwater people love teams. They love them! i don't know one person on this blog but of course we're a team! Ha!

And I am sorry, if you work for Meltwater, you deserve anything you get. I bet said twitter people have ripped off individuals before.

As for ex Meltwater people, we have to live with the burden of this horrible company on our resumes. Check into it: Texas, New York, Silicon Valley/SF. Companies are starting to talk about the scams meltwater pulls.

Love live this blog. If some very bad stuff has to be tossed out into the open forum in order to prevent this company from doing more harm, then so be it. Casualties of war!

Anonymous said...

After the MD managed to mispell my name and not replying to my mails (probably busy cold calling) I just deleted the whole entry in my CV.

Nobody knows Meltwater anyway, so it just does not matter.

i suppose you could put "MNews" or something on the CV.

Meltwater News - the worst place I have EVER worked.

Why, you ask? Read the blog. Hundres of people could be wrong, but trust me; they are not.

Steer clear Meltwater.

Definitely hundreds. Customers and employees.

the thing is, meltwater COULD be a solid company. they have the foundation for it. many of the people who work there are very smart and interesting.

the place is just so mucked up with crap that i feel this can never be accomplished. they will sink at some point soon.

Anonymous said...

I agree h the above comment. It could be good but not any time soon. There are some great people in Meltwater. It's just that some of the people at the top (Jonas, Kaveh, Hanna O, etc.) are just such poor managers and people in general. God bless anyone under those idiots.

Anonymous said...

wild-eyed maniacs, those people. completely irrational. driven to the point of being lunatics.

there is nothing wrong with passion and hard work in pursuit of success. they just take it to level that becomes hurtful, destructive and insane.

Anonymous said...

I agree. There are some really great people in the company. REALLY GREAT people.
Some of my best friends.

With that said, there are also some really shallow people.

But to be honest, I have seen way more shallow people in other companies I have worked for.

Anonymous said...

I concur with the above. They hurt! And it hurts big!

Anonymous said...

It is the irrational policies and cult-like devotion that screws it up for the good people.

If they maintained their service and didn't build it with playing cards, then maybe they'd have a chance. Maybe.

I wish the best for the good people in that organization.

The rest can rot.

Anonymous said...

When I write on here I worry I am helping to tarnish the good people's reputations.

Especially now that someone / a group has attacked certain individuals directly.

Their families and friends are seeing terrible things written about them.

Yes, there are a lot of things about the company that need to change, but is this really the best way to go about getting that change to happen?

I just feel guilty now.

Anonymous said...

looks like meltwater is claiming on twitter that their employees and clients are being harrassed by an anonymous person.

yes, that may be the case. that guy has no right saying that anybody is "boning" anybody else...though i know that does happen (maybe not with the person called out on twitter)...

but let's look at all the meltwater mentions on twitter in the last few weeks. many come direct from prospects and clients complaining about the sales process and contract makeup.

thing is, meltwaterians are indoctrinated with this idea that their service is the absolute best on the planet and EVERY company out there could use it. this leads to meltwater sales reps thinking that prospects are straight up DUMB if they don't purchase the service. it is not consultative at all and entirely unorganized.

Anonymous said...

it isn't a guy
it's a girl.

and they know who she is.
action is being taken.

freedom of speech is one thing.
but defamation of character is another thing entirely.

Anonymous said...

there is no place for that...

Where can I read about the boning?

This is completely true. The culture in Meltwater is that prospects are plain idiots, working only 9-5 - yes, that's right, they actually make fun of people that work regular hours.

I don't know what you are all talking about here?

I just took a job with them, and they DID say it is a sales job.

And they DID tell me I would have to call businesses in a cold fashion to generate my own leads.

And they DID tell me the work load is big, with potential for long hours.

You guys act like they never tell you that in the interview, but I swear, they must have told us 20 times!

And even better.........
They told me about this blog in the interview!
They told me to read it, along with all of the other people applying for the job.
They didn't try to hide it, and were COMPLETELY UP FRONT AND HONEST about this blog's existence.
I thought that was very upstanding of the individuals who were interviewing me.

So here I am, if only to tell you that...
I took the job, and I feel like I know exactly what I'm walking into. And I'm excited. :) Even after reading this entire blog.

Really excited!

The people at Meltwater seem incredibly cool.
Youthful, intelligent, interesting, fun.

I mean, sales is sales is sales is sales.

At least I get to do it in a company with a bunch of people I really enjoy being around.
As opposed to sitting in a cubicle alone on the phone.

And I met several individuals who did well in their first few months and were promoted to director positions within a year at Meltwater.
That is a rare phenomenon in the world if you ask me. So I can't wait to get started!

I just thought you should know that you didn't convince me with all your huffing and puffing.

If anything, I feel better about taking the job after reading all of these whining stories.

You just made them look even more credible in my eyes, especially since they told me to check out what you had to say before I took the job.

Chew on that a bit.

With all of these silly comments and blog posts you are actually making yourself less credible, and ultimately pushing us the opposite direction.

Food for thought, people.

Anonymous said...

"And they DID tell me the work load is big, with potential for long hours. "

Without extra pay. Try to actually work there for a while, and you will understand me.

"Really excited!

The people at Meltwater seem incredibly cool.
Youthful, intelligent, interesting, fun.

I mean, sales is sales is sales is sales."

I know man. I was just like you. This is normal. Again, actually work for a year there before you give us feedback on your time at Meltwater. I can guarantee you a shift in belief.

"They told me about this blog in the interview!"

Ever heard of the term "damage control"? They are doing damage control, the gegenteil beeing you discovering the blog, thinking they are trying to hide it. This blog is a long, bad commercial for Meltwater and they know it; if not they wouldn't gather resources in order to do damage control.

"And I met several individuals who did well in their first few months and were promoted to director positions within a year at Meltwater."

This will diminish as the organization grows and the need for management decreases. And that you need to be director in order to feel good about the job is a warning sign and lying to yourself: directors still do coldcalling, and they sacrifice everything for Jørn Lyseggen. Trust me, as a manager, Melwater is not the place to be.

"You just made them look even more credible in my eyes"

Yeah right. As if the blog is a good commercial for Meltwater. Stop lying.

"With all of these silly comments and blog posts you are actually making yourself less credible, and ultimately pushing us the opposite direction."

"Pushing us". Yay, way to go Meltwater. Yet another culture whore in the company.

High five, anyway. And happy closing week!

2) A good advice: Actually test things out before you start making decisions about it.

High 5.

See....

Your comments are so hateful, and nasty in response to what anyone writes.

Maybe if you were professional about what you said in the blog and in the comments people would believe you.

I mean, you just called a stranger a "whore" !!

You don't even know me, and your response to my comment was so nasty and hurtful.

Thank you.
You just helped confirm what I was thinking even more.

Meltwater has my vote in this competition any day.

My advice to you is to get a new job and move on with your life.

Best of luck to you in whatever you do.

"My advice to you is to get a new job and move on with your life."

I did. And man am I greatful for that.

But Meltwater, in the way it is organized and markets itself as a great place to work (sogenannte International Trainee, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internship), is just plain wrong. That is the reason why I want to spread the word about Meltwater, so that people are better informed about it's culture and everyday workday than I was.

Had I been working for the average company I never would have bothered to write blog posts like these. The reason why so many write their stories is because is Meltwater is more than average miserable.

You sound like a nice guy. Probably straight out of college and fresh on the job market.

I apologize if you got insulted of the whore expression. It was just a very precise comment to what Meltwater are trying to accomplish.

Try things out at Meltwater, and don't forget to sell as much as possible when they give you high commisions. This is likely to be the only time in which you get reasonable hourly page - please read other posts about Meltwaters (more than) deceiving pay structure.

And if you, as many, many people before you have done, realize that Meltwater as an employee is less than optimal, just quit on the day and look for something better; it sure as hell exists, among gazillions of companies offering trainees to business grads (without "hate" blogs as these mind you).

Just don't forget: The day you want to quit, you will have feeling of beeing a loser (not working as much as Meltwaterians, or selling), but please understand that this is all just part of the brainwashing culture - you are unique and have skills way past the minimum required for working with telemarketing at Meltwater.

Have a nice weekend.

Reposting a good comment that is stuck in another post:

In my year and a half, I was continually amazed by the dillusion, irrational expectations, complete disarray and mindless "fun" exhibited by the management. It was not long before this amazement turned to bewilderment and eventually disgust.

Meltwater helped me in that I know now how bad a company can be to work for. There is not a day that I walk into my office without a sigh of relief that I am not entering the meltwater circus.

Potential candidates and clients would be wise to steer clear of these jokers.

Oh and a word to potential clients...this poster is correct in that you can easily get 50% or more off your subscription if you wait until the last day of a month. Hell, you could probably get more than 50% discount.

Anonymous said...

Potential client warning:

Do not buy Meltwater News or Meltwater Drive services for full prices.

Closing week this month at Meltwater will be Friday 28.08, and if you hang on you can get 50% off or more, with no cut in agents and user logins. Just stay firm to your discounted price and they will eventually give in because of their culture.

The average deal at Meltwater is just that: almost 50% of the full price you first get; you are a fool as a business customer to pay more than 50%.

You can also get heavily discounted added years to the login; again, just recalcuate 50% discount and stay firm.

All the best!

Anonymous said...

Actually, to refute the last comment... Meltwater does not operate like that anymore as far as "discounting" goes.

There are strict new rules in place as far as how much can be discounted, and nothing can go below the retail price of the basic platform.

Things used to operate that way, but that is not how it is any longer.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
They actually have super strict policies now.

AND... I would like to put this out there for you to think about...

I recently worked at Meltwater, as a manager, and may or may not agree with some of the things you have to say in this blog.

BUT...

I have been turned down for several job positions at other companies lately because they read this blog, and all of the negative things that are said about Meltwater... and instantly my resume became discredited!

They turned me down saying that my experience seemed to be coming from a "non - legit" company, based on what they had read here...

So you posting all of this negativity actually cost me my new job.

Thank you "anti-meltwater"

I would really have loved to use this on my resume, but now I am back to square one.

Have you ever thought about that before?

I feel utterly lost and heartbroken because my Meltwater experience is no longer worth anything, and all of the Looooooooooong hours, and haaaaaaaaard work I put into the company will show nothing for my next career opportunity.

If this blog didn't exist, I would have been able to use Meltwater as my credible "X years" as experience...

And now, I am shit out of luck.

Please consider this before you decide to post any more on this public forum!!!!

Neglect the comments about the "new policy". Go for the discounts!

"They turned me down saying that my experience seemed to be coming from a "non - legit" company, based on what they had read here..."

I am so sorry for you. Really. Very sorry.

But think about it, what have you really learned from Meltwater telemarketing?

Not that much. And yes, it is toy company.

High five!

Anonymous said...

I'm serious about the discounts.
That really isn't the way it works there anymore.

Not after the last quarterly meeting of managers.

I know that is how it used to be, I was there...
But no longer. I was there for the change.
As I said before, the policies/pricing standards actually exist now. Promise.
50% discounts and all that jazz just don't exist anymore.

And you can call it a "toy company" if you like, but I disagree.

I had a TON of responsibility and actually had about 7 jobs in one. And my experience was ANYTHING BUT just telemarketing.

I may agree with a lot of your gripes about the way the company operates, but still, you are ruining my chances... and anyone else who quits or gets fired as of now... to find a decent job with this on our resumes!

And I have 0 experience since college except for Meltwater, so you have really screwed me.
We may have similar opinions, but you are being insanely selfish by airing this here for the world to see.

Hope you had an easy time finding a new job before you starting fucking the rest of us over!
Because that is truly what you are doing!

You act like you are on our side, but you have done nothing but ruin my job hunt.

Thank. You.

Anonymous said...

You and your fucking job hunt. No one cares about it, so take your god damn bitching and whining elsewhere.

I find it fascinating that they changed their be all end all sales model over night.

It's hard for me to see Meltwaterians no more beeing able to do "whore deals", as they call them.

I would advice customers to search existing customers and hammer Meltwater with the heavy discounts they got, or better yet take the numbers and try to get a better deal at Cizion, which in many cases is better than Meltwater. If customers only knew they could fight together and end the high pricing once and for all.

Maybe the management sometime over night have had a belief shift from organizing their life around making Jørn Lyseggen a fortune to making a cutting edge work place, but I doubt it.

Wait for the last Friday of the month, talk about prices existing clients are getting for the login and negotiate. They love to do whore deals.

Glad you want the Meltwater clients to "fight together"

Funny you won't "fight together" with your fellow ex-Meltwater employees!

I also have had a difficult time finding a job after Meltwater because of this blog, and my lack of other corporate experience outside of Meltwater.

YOU ARE MAKING IT VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO USE THE IMT PROGRAM WITH MELTWATER ON OUR CVS!!!!

Who cares what happened there!
Get over it!

I'm sure you already have a new job, as the others have said, and have no idea how this is affecting recent "meltwater grads" ... but you ARE basically making it IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO FIND WORK with Meltwater on our CV!

Please, for the love of God, take this blog down!

"YOU ARE MAKING IT VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO USE THE IMT PROGRAM WITH MELTWATER ON OUR CVS!!!!"

1) If you had actually been learning something other than hitting digits on a phone (I mean - come on - it could just have been shampoo you're selling. Meltwater don't do consulting.) they would have looked pass this blog, yet they did not. There's a reason for that. Think about it.

2) The more you post, the better for the blog. May I repeat:
Thanks to you for replying to the posts; you play an important role in pushing this site high up in the Google search engine, so that potential clients and employees get a more nuanced picture of what's really going on in the Meltwater organizatian as compared to the highly biased commercial named www.meltwater.com. Negative or positive: the stories are here more than enough, now we just need you to view the site and write posts so that it remains high up at google.

3) Do your homework before applying for a job.

4) Don't get caught up in the rat race too much. Read the Four Hour Work Week from Tim Ferriss and go out for a party and enjoy the freedom you have from not working at Meltwater. Enjoy! =)

5) Again, your in the wrong place talking to the wrong people. No one cares about about your job hunt, so take your god damn bitching and whining elsewhere. And truth be told: If you were so good for Meltwater, you should be good somewhere else (perhaps the hiring prosess was not that strickt at all, just searching the most whore material for the culture? Meltwater still does give out HUGE discounts. I have recently seen it. I am pretty sure a number of people/competitors have reported it to the DOJ as, while good for clients who get duped into this shitty software, it is technically an unfair business practice and highly illegal. If you want to see bad things come for this company then I suggest you send a tip to the DOJ, FTC, and other anti-competitive watchdogs. One audit would cripple these losers. Memeber Capone?

Seriously, you can still wait unitil the end of the month and get a real great deal. Happy closing!

Dear Blog and dear author of the report concerning Meltwater Japan,

Thank you very much for the helpful information and insight about day-to-day activities at the Meltwater workplace.

I am about to apply for a position at the Meltwater branch office in Japan and am especially interested in getting to know about the current situation there. Most of the blog entries are concerned with branch offices in the US and are above all at least three years old.

Could I ask anyone who is currently working at Meltwater Japan about his recent experiences at and stand towards the company?

Thanks a lot.
